Question: If I don’t win the contest, can I still enroll in your school?
Answer: Absolutely, you can enroll even if you don’t win the contest. We will consider applications from all contest entrants and will make an offer if we think you’ll be a good fit at SMUS.
Question: Is the scholarship just for one year?
Answer: The Best School Year Ever® scholarship is for one year only. However, qualifying students will be able to apply for other boarding scholarships, and all students can apply for financial aid after your Best School Year Ever® is up.
Question: Am I eligible for the contest?
Answer: To be eligible to enter the contest, you must be a resident of Canada or the United States and be between grades 8 and 12 in September 2016. You can find the full eligibility criteria in the contest Terms and Conditions.
Question: I’m from a US territory. Am I eligible to enter?
Answer: At this time, only students who are legal residents of a US state are eligible. We will look at expanding eligibility to students from US territories in future years.
Question: Why aren’t students from Quebec eligible?
Answer: Quebec’s legal system presents us with some challenges when it comes to including students from that province. We will look at expanding eligibility to Quebec students in future years.
Question: How do I enter?
Answer: Submit your application, which consists of a three-minute video and PDF copies of your two most recent report cards. Submit your application by filling out the online form that appears at the bottom of the contest website (www.BestSchoolYearEver.ca).
Question: Can the scholarship be used anywhere?
Answer: The scholarship is offered by St. Michaels University School and is only valid for students enrolling at SMUS.
Question: What should my video be about?
Answer: Your video should help us to get to know you better in 2-3 minutes, but you have lots of options about how you do that. Here are some ideas to get you started: a) Tell us about yourself. b) What would make 2016-2017 your best school year ever? c) What do you like most about school? d) Why would you be a great addition to the SMUS student body? Question: Is a video required to enter?
Answer: A video is required to enter the contest; however, we understand that some people are camera shy so we don’t require you to be in your video. We do need your video to tell us about you, so if you’re more of a writer, for example, write an essay and read it, illustrating your video with photos. To see what other students have done in the past, go you YouTube and search for “Best School Year Ever.”
Question: Does the full-year scholarship include airfare or other expenses?
Answer: The trip to the school for the three finalists to conduct interviews is fully covered but the contest does not make provisions for expenses like travel to and from the school during the school year and breaks, nor does it include uniform costs. When estimating travel costs, budget three return trips in total (to school in September, home for Christmas Break, home for Spring Break and home for the summer in June). Uniform expenses run approximately $500-700.
Question: How will I know if I’ve been selected as a semi-finalist?
Answer: We will contact semi-finalists by email on Monday, January 25, 2016 to notify them that they have been selected as contest semi-finalists. All other contest entrants will be contacted by email on or after January 25, 2016.
